Henry V111th.
and his Six Wives.
Henry came to the throne at the age of 17, a handsome giant of a man at that time.
A flamboyant character, he squandered his father's fortune. The 'Golden years' of
Henry's reign coincide with his marriage to Catherine of Aragon. He married the
last five of his wives and committed most of his acts of tyranny within the last third
of his reign. He broke with the Church of Rome in1533 allowing him to divorce
Catherine of Aragon. Between 1536 to 1540 he was responsible for 'dissolving'
or closing 850 monasteries in England and Wales. In his fading years he suffered
a number of illnesses and died quite a sad , lonely figure on the 28th January 1547.
