Some of the finest troops Napoleon III sent to the Crimea were the French Zouaves. They wore a mixture of North African and  European dress, more comfortable and practical compared with the restrictive uniforms of the Russian and British forces.

They fought in every battle except Balaclava and led the final attack on the Malakoff fort which finally caused the fall of Sebastopol.
