Formed in 1777, the 71st Highland Regiment of Foot became the Highland Light Infantry in 1810, and was joined by the former 74th Highland Regiment of the East Indies Company in 1881. By 1900 the two regiments had battle honours for India, Gibraltar, South Africa, the Peninsular War, the storming of Sebastopol in the Crimea, and the Nile Campaign of1882 culminating in the Battle of Tel-el-Kebir. Together they would go on to claim a further 127 honours for the two World Wars.
