The 2nd Madras Lancers were raised in 1784 for the wars against Tipu Sultan of Mysore. These ended with the capture of Seringapatan under General Wellesley and introduced that new star of British Military History - the Future Duke of Wellington.

The 2nd Lancers won battle honours for Sholingur, Carnatie, Mysore and Seringapatan. Then followed an uneventful period until 1885 when they were involved in the war with Burma.
